Evidence is building to support an increasingly popular belief that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is out of control, approving harmful substances while passing over helpers.
The latest example of this regards marijuana. Ever since 1930, when Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) Director Harry J. Anslinger declared war on and demonized “marijuana, the assassin of youth,” Americans have been the victims of a national propaganda campaign to suppress and criminalize the use of this pervasive, native weed.
Did you know that pot was a legal medicine until 1942? Although it is now included on the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Schedule 1 Drugs list – right alongside heroin (which some would say truly is a demonic drug due to its potency, easy addiction, and excruciating weaning) – It was only in 1972 that “disgraced Attorney General John Mitchell of the Nixon administration placed marijuana in this category,” according to Scientific American.
The DEA says that all Schedule 1 drugs have “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” The DEA refuses to re-evaluate cannabis for medical its value, most recently in August 2016, saying that “the drug’s therapeutic value has not been proved scientifically.”
Forbes reported in March 2018 that the World Health Organization (WHO) disagreed in March 2018, ruling that there are “no adverse health outcomes but rather several medical applications for cannabidiol, a.k.a. CBD, despite U.S. federal policy on this cannabinoid chemical.”
It is important to understand that CBD does not have any mind-altering properties – it is a natural and non-psychoactive chemical. Uninformed moralists who believe the Anslinger smear campaign against MJ object to the THC content of pot, which is responsible for “getting high.”
Goodness knows we don’t want a bunch of happy, hungry hippies running around, not bothering anybody. That simply is not good business – except for snack food makers perhaps.
The DEA did approve a synthetic form of THC as a Schedule II controlled substance in November 2017. This paved the way for commercial production of dronabinol (Syndros) to treat “nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients
This federal largesse benefits the drug maker, of course. This from Herb magazine:
“The restrictions give Insys the freedom to set the price point for its own legal brand of THC, which can range $1,000 to $2,000 for a month’s supply.”
Since many humans like getting high without breaking any laws, they resort to acquiring synthetic substitutes for the actual marijuana plant. Known as K2 or Spice, these chemicals are different from those found in MJ – and may be deadly. With more than 150 products available – all of which are unregulated – reports like this one from the Huffington Post are showing that users of synthetic pot are experiencing “convulsions, kidney injury, toxicity to the heart, strokes and anxiety” and had been linked to 20 deaths as of February 2017.
The New York Times reported in April 2018 that synthetic MJ tainted by a rat poison that causes severe bleeding called brodifacoum “sickened 107 people in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana; three of them have died.”
US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) added to this miserable situation in January this year (2018) by announcing the “a return to the rule of law,” directing all US attorneys to persecute pot users by prosecuting them.
Are we having a flashback to the days of Richard “I am not a crook” Nixon? What on earth is going on in the mind of Mr. Sessions and DOJ leadership?
To find the answer, perhaps we need to follow the money a bit further. It turns out that AG Sessions “has hypocritically granted a monopoly on the sale of THC to big pharma company Insys Therapeutics whose drug fentanyl is responsible for killing tens of thousands every year.” Top executives at Insys Michael Baich (former CEO) and John Kapoor (founder) were “caught bribing doctors to prescribe opioid drugs that have led to one of the largest addiction problems in the history of the world.”
So there you have it. Taxpayers are funding Big Government which is backing Big Pharma to control all the profits generated by domestic MJ production while keeping genuinely helpful and healing marijuana from us – the taxpayers. Understood is that the usual bribes and payoffs are changing hands (theirs, not ours).
If you are fed up with this flagrant hypocrisy, contact your elected representatives and remind them that the midterm elections are coming up. The squeaky wheel gets the grease – so sound off, fair-minded and freedom-loving Americans!
