It would appear that Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has developed her own unique political style when attempting to answer tough political policy issues. She simply smiles, flashing those big brown eyes and impressive white choppers for all to see, and tells reporters she’ll figure it all out when she’s elected.
No doubt that smile makes a beautiful visual for her legion of Bronx fans who voted for the young socialist promising to turn New York’s 14th congressional district into another Caracas, Venezuela.
CNN Jack Tapper was on the receiving end of that smile recently when asking about her ambitious agenda regarding freebies — such as forgiving student loan debt, free public housing, free education, and single-payer health care to name just a few.
The price-tag comes to just over 40-trillion dollars over the next decade, and Tapper wanted to know how Cortez was going to pay for all those goodies?
Cortez immediately flashed those expressive eyes as if she were about to answer the question, Tapper waited, and Cortez finally responded:
“One of the things that we need to realize when we look at something like ‘Medicare for all — ‘Medicare for all’ would save the American people a very large amount of money.”
The “State of the Union” host seemed bemused at Cortez’s bizarre none-response and attempted to once again pin her down for a cohesive answer.
Cortez continued, “What we see as well is that these systems are not just ‘pie-in-the-sky.’ Many of them are accomplished by every modern civilized democracy in the western world.”
Tapper now seemed totally perplexed by the young socialist’s response; no doubt Cortez has learned well the art of question dodging.
However Tapper showing some “true grit” for a CNN host, circled back reminding the young socialist that even “left-leaning” analysts, have concluded that Ocasio-Cortez’s plan for universal Medicare would end up costing more then 30 trillion dollars at minimum, even after factoring in massive tax hikes, the balance sheet would offset the final cost by roughly 2-trillion dollars.
Tapper continued pressing Cortez regarding her projections and zeroed in on Cortez’s 3-decade cost estimate, which would come to a staggering $218-trillion dollars for universal health-care alone, minus the other promised goodies.
Moreover, single-payer healthcare would be the end of employer-based insurance, which most working Americans favor.
Disproportionality taxing the rich to achieve free healthcare, forgiving student loan debt, free public housing, and free education, will simply continue driving folks out of the state, which is already becoming an issue.
As for the CNN interview, Tapper did a good job trying to get some basic answers from Cortez who actually doesn’t have a clue on how basic economics works within a free market environment.
Social media, of course, responded to the interview, with several interesting comments.
“CNN’s Jake Tapper presses socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on how she’ll pay for her $40 Trillion in government programs.”
She can’t answer.pic.twitter.com/RDvHYoRSZA
“.@jaketapper does a great job pressing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on how she’d pay for her healthcare plan — she says economic activity from millennial who would buy homes if they didn’t have student debt — and highlights that she did not actually answer his two attempts to ask.”
