The persecution of President Trump will continue unabated regardless of whether Mueller ends his probe soon or not. In fact, waiting in the wings is Democratic operative Letitia James, the newly elected New York Attorney General.
Unlike the Special Counsel who has remained personally silent on his investigation into Russian collusion, James seemed almost giddy with her new found power on NBC, as she acknowledged her quest to find a crime, regardless of whether one was committed or not.
“We will use every area of the law to investigate President Trump and his business transactions and that of his family as well,” James, a Democrat, told NBC News in her first extensive interview since she was elected last month.
In her zeal to investigate the president and his former business associates, James is attempting to change New York’s double jeopardy laws to restrict federal law regarding the president’s ability to grant pardons — which may actually be unconstitutional in that it would infringe on the president’s role as Commander-in-Chief.
James explained her rationale for wanting to change New York’s double jeopardy laws, which has been on the books for countless decades. Stating she wants to be able to pursue state charges against anyone the president might pardon for an alleged crime. Currently, under the existing law, she might not be able to do so.
“I think within the first 100 days this bill will be passed,” she said, adding, “It is a priority because I have concerns with respect to the possibility that this administration might pardon some individuals who might face some criminal charges, but I do not want them to be immune from state charges.”
James outlined some of the probes she intends to pursue with regard to the president, his businesses and his family members. They include:
- Any potential illegalities involving Trump’s real estate holdings in New York, highlighted by a New York Times article, published in October into the President’s finances.
- The June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian official.
- Examine government subsidies Trump received, which was also an article in the NYT.
- Whether he is in violation of the emoluments clause in the U.S. Constitution through his New York businesses.
- Continue to probe the Trump Foundation.
“We want to investigate anyone in his orbit who has, in fact, violated the law,” said James, who was endorsed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
However the wider issue isn’t simply changing current law, but the reasoning behind changing the law, which should send chills up the back of every critical thinking individual who believes in due process, and equal justice under the law.
While the Mueller probe used a bogus dossier as a pretext to investigate the president, James has no such desire to masquerade her intent to get the Trump family at all cost, even if it means changing state law, to do it.
James is a new breed of prosecutor, she allows her progressive dogma and personal animus towards the president to dictating her desire to go after Trump. Her tactics are those of a totalitarian regime attempting to silence the opposition.
Moreover her promise for sweeping investigations into president Trump, his family and “anyone” in his circle who may have violated the law” will have negative ramifications for decades to come.
Ironically we’ve already witnessed the massive backlash by critical thinking individuals regarding the abuse by Democrats towards Justice Kavanaugh, imagine for a moment the open rebellion by Trump supporters if the new attorney general actually goes on a fishing expedition against the president.
