Sen. Cruz Wants “El Chapo” To Pay For Border Wall

Senator Ted Cruz recently decided to reintroduce a bill he originally submitted to Congress back in 2017 called the “El Chapo Act.” The bill would confiscate the over $14 billion in illicit drug money reportedly linked to the notorious drug lord.

Cruz’ proposal came a day after both political parties ironed out a tentative agreement “in principle” giving the President far less then he was seeking for his border wall – a figure just under $1.4 billion which is about 4 billion less than what he had initially requested.

The political tug-of-war between Democrats and Republicans trying to reach a compromise at the 11th hour with final details still being hashed out, might, in fact, torpedo the ongoing negotiations.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said, “We want to see what the final piece of legislation looks like. It’s hard to say definitively whether or not the President is going to sign it until we know everything that’s in it,” Sanders continued, “Unlike Nancy Pelosi, we actually like to read legislation before we agree to it. The President isn’t fully happy, as he said yesterday with everything that’s in the legislation but there are some positive pieces of it.”

As an alternative to Trump’s “national emergency”, Cruz’s proposal of seizing the illicit funds of Joaquín Guzman Loera to pay for the wall is a brilliant idea.

The Texas Republican is urging his colleagues to pass the “Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act” which would divert drug proceeds from cartel bosses to fund border security.

Mexico’s most notorious drug lord was convicted on Tuesday in a Brooklyn, New York federal courtroom of running a massive international drug smuggling operation. The jury handed down a life sentence convicting the 61-year-old escape artist, on all counts. Prosecutors are seeking $14 billion from “El Chapo,” which is more than double President Trump’s $5.7 billion wish list for the border wall.

Shortly before the Sinaloa cartel boss was convicted on drug trafficking, weapons violations, and money laundering charges Cruz tweeted out:

“America’s justice system prevailed today in convicting Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, on all ten counts. U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits & other assets from El Chapo which should go towards funding our wall to #SecureTheBorder.”

The Texas Senator and one time presidential reveal to the President, reintroduced his bill in January. At that time he reiterated how seizing drug assets of Mexican drug lords, was in some way poetic justice for the countless American lives lost because of drugs coming through our border from Mexico saying, “Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way to secure our southern border, and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals.”

Adding, “By leveraging any criminally forfeited assets of El Chapo and other murderous drug lords, we can offset the cost of securing our border and make meaningful progress toward delivering on the promises made to the American people.”

Moreover, the President can fulfill another campaign promise that in a sense Mexico through their infamous citizen “El Chapo” will be paying for America’s border wall.

$1.4 billion is far more than the $1.00 offered by Pelosi. Trump wins again.

Totally brilliant. Why shouldn’t that money go to protecting our borders from criminals like him? Supposedly, the taxes collected from us at the gasoline pump are supposed to pay for upkeep and development of our highways and bridges and that is logical. Applying confiscated money and assets from drugs lords to protecting our borders is just as logical. Way to go Ted.

Absolutely a great idea after the wall the rest of the money can be put in social security and pay back what Bush took for Iraqi war. It’s better then raising taxes to pay for it!

The Donald Trump family should pay for the wall. They are the only ones who want it. Everyone in government doen’t want it but they are afraid of the trumps. El Chapo’s money should go to the people of Mexico whose families were destroyed by him and his murderous thugs

Ted Cruz is a guy who thinks in terms of what’s BEST for the American people and America PERIOD not in terms of “what’s best for my party so that I can stay in power and continue to rob the American people” SO I trust his thinking process and judgement and say LET’S GO WITH HIS PROPOSAL, let the DRUG LORDS pay for the security and welfare of the American people for a change instead of the taxpayers paying out countless billions year after year trying to protect ourselves from the horrific effects of illicit drugs entering the USA. What’s to think about? Gad lawmakers, get off your haunches and listen to the Senator with BRAINS, Mr. Ted Cruz, and move his thought/bill to fruition>

Sounds like it’s a good way to make Mexico pay for the wall. Especially since his two sons are now on the job.
