The battle for the political soul of the Democratic Party turned even uglier on Wednesday when brash upstart freshman congresswoman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, decided to ante up the growing hostilities between herself and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, by suggesting the 78-year old Speaker may be harboring some deep seeded animus towards woman-of-color, in-essence implying that Pelosi may be a closet racist.
The growing tensions between the Speaker and the 29-year old former barmaid turned legislator soon after the freshmen legislator from the Bronx was sworn in, challenging the leadership within the party almost immediately, by purposing an ambitious however unrealistic Climate Change plan, she dubbed “The Green New Deal” which called initially for the elimination of airplanes along with farting cows, which no doubt to the casual observer appeared that the once august and esteemed body had become a cartoon version of National Lampoon’s “Animal House.”
Her ridiculous proposal, if taken seriously, would come with a minimum 33 trillion dollar price tag. Moreover perhaps to show solidarity for the shoot-from-the-lip, ill-informed lawmaker the entire roster of 2020 Democratic hopefuls all went on the record in support of the unworkable boondoggle.
Moreover, her ability for cleverly working the media with irrelevant tweets by purposely creating drama, almost always dominating the 24/7 news cycle, along with utilizing social media to the extreme, has made AOC the “pied-piper” of the extreme left within the party.
This latest flap occurred when a reporter asked Pelosi on Wednesday if she had any regrets about her verbal jabs concerning AOC, a defiant Pelosi responded “no regrets,” adding, “I have no regrets about anything. Regrets is not what I do.”
However, the continued back and forth on twitter between herself and AOC and other rebellious freshmen Democrats on the sidelines, adding fuel to the growing feud between the two.
Especially the continued public spectacle of the duo engaged in interviews, tweets, and counter-tweets, destroying the carefully crafted illusion that House Democrats are still pulling in the same direction.
The Speaker was especially irritated concerning the 4-rebellious freshmen, namely Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib along with their ringleader Ms. Ocasio-Cortez for voting against a Democratic border spending bill last month, highlighting Pelosi’s inability to hold the entire House together on a key vote.
Pelosi who prides herself in delivering a unanimous House vote lashed out at the four upstarts when interviewed by the New York Times stating the four women “have their public whatever and their Twitter world” but “didn’t have any following” inside Congress.
AOC immediately fired back on Twitter raising the heat even further. On Wednesday when the Washington Post asked AOC regarding this latest dust-up between the two, AOC responded that the “persistent singling out” by the Speaker may be more than “outright disrespectful.”
Adding, “When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance to protect more moderate members, which I understood.”
“But the persistent singling out . . . it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful . . . the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”
However, AOC didn’t stop at suggesting Pelosi may be a racist, she also accused in an earlier interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour, that Congress uses women and minorities as “bargaining chips.”
Adding, “When it comes to women of color in Congress, particularly the freshman, it’s that we both have encountered and represented communities that have been auctioned off and negotiated off for the last 20 years. And we’re over it”…more popcorn?
