Faced with a growing backlash progressive politicians in Portland, Oregon, are considering a law that would make it illegal for demonstrators to wear masks of any kind during protests.
The surprise “common-sense” approach by elected officials is in response to the continued violence within the city created by masked Antifa demonstrators clashing with opponents, and what can only be described as wolf-packs, in which an individual(s) is singled out and attacked by a number of masked protesters.
Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw was the first to call for anti-mask regulations following the assault of conservative journalist Andy Ngo by Antifa protesters on June 29.
“A lot of people are emboldened because they know they can’t be identified,” Outlaw said to reporters at a press conference.
Eileen Park, a spokeswoman from the mayor’s office said city officials have discussed outlawing face masks or coverings that make it impossible to identify demonstrators.
Adding that Mayor Wheeler (a Democrat), “wants to weigh his options thoroughly and hear concerns from community leaders before making a decision.”
According to the Oregon American Civil Liberties Union, the policy if enacted would somehow violate the First Amendment.
Spokeswoman Sarah Armstrong also chimed in stating “Behavior is the issue, not the mask.”
“A policy that prohibits wearing a mask to a protest not only risks chilling First Amendment-protected activities, particularly for those who wear ‘masks’ for political and religious reasons, it misses the issue entirely,” she continued.
However, the First Amendment says nothing about a demonstrator wearing a mask in order to protest freely.
The First Amendment to the Constitution
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
The truth of the matter is, this has nothing to do with the First Amendment, and everything to do with progressive dogma and a dangerous policy put forth by an incompetent mayor ordering his police force to “stand-down” in the face of anarchists forcibly taking over sections of the city and in many cases threatening law-abiding citizens, while law enforcement looks the other way.
Leader of the Patriot Prayer Group, Joey Gibson, says he supports the idea of anti-mask legislation.
“The second the mask comes off, they even act polite,” Gibson reportedly said.
“If Ted Wheeler is tired of the national attention, all they have to do is enforce a no-mask law,” he continued.
According to the Wall Street Journal, there are currently 15 states that have laws outlawing the wearing of face masks in some form, ironically many of those states instituted the law as a direct response to the KKK during the 20th century.
Antifa much like the KKK of old, is a violent group of well-funded thugs, using the same props as those bygone segregationists, white robes replaced with black uniforms, hoods replaced with face masks, clubs replace bats.
Moreover, countless documented incidents of mayhem and violence by this group of malcontents have been recorded; early this year Antifa leader Joseph “Jose” Alcoff, also known as “Chepe,” was arrested and charged with multiple felonies in Philadelphia concerning an attack on two badly outnumbered Marines in November.
The Marines, Alejandro Godinez, and Luis Torres testified in December that a group of 10 to 12 Antifa members called them “Nazis” and “white supremacists” and attacked them on the street despite their denials that they had no association with the right-wing group demonstrating nearby.
This is what Portland Mayor Wheeler is protecting in his city; thus far the mayor has been lucky that no one has died at the hands of these thugs.
