Conspiracy theories – we all know them, and we all love them, so much so that they have even made some very good (and some very bad) movies about them! Take a look at some of the very good ones, as you explore my list of the Top 7 Conspiracy Theory Movies Ever Made!
- The Manchurian Candidate
Like its 1962 predecessor, 2004’s remake of “The Manchurian Candidate” is a political science fiction movie starring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, and Live Schreiber. The plot features government implants, mind control, assassinations, and covert operations by American Intelligence agencies.
- Capricorn One
A long-standing conspiracy theory is that NASA and the government faked the moon landings. 1977’s Capricorn One explores how and why that could have been done, and the resulting coverup, with a faked mission to Mars, rather than the moon. A solid thriller, and notable for having starred OJ Simpson, before he spawned some “conspiracy theories” of his own!
- The DaVinci Code
Conspiracy theories abound in Dan Brown’s novel, and film of the same name. Themes within the movie include religion, symbolism, and the Illuminati. It is an exploration of an alternative religious history where French kings were descended from the bloodline of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene.
- The Bourne Identity
No list of “best conspiracy theory” movies could ever be complete without mention of the “Jason Bourne” series, so why not go with the original – 2002’s “The Bourne Identity.” Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne suffers from severe memory loss but, has incredible skills as a sleeper agent /Manchurian candidate. As he is discovered adrift by a fisherman, he does not know who he is but still has the capacity to speak a number of languages and also has amazing combat skills.
Part historical drama and part conspiracy thriller, Oliver Stone’s examination of the Kennedy assassination is believed by many to be the “template” for the perfect conspiracy theory movie. Just as the actual theories surrounding the assassination of JFK, many question the veracity of Stone’s claims. But, it’s hard to deny the flick’s cultural impact. Using the Zapruder film and other evidence, Stone examines the theory that JFK was murdered by factions of the government.
- Marathon Man
As if people were not already afraid of going to the dentist, 1976’s Marathon Man turned the sight of a dental chair into something that would send shivers down anyone’s spine. Laurence Olivier terrifies as a sadistic Nazi doctor, and director John Schlesinger brings the same sense of dread and big-city paranoia to the movie as he did with Midnight Cowboy, his other urban classic. But it’s Dustin Hoffman who earns the flick its spot at on my list, as he heroically portrays the “everyman” pulled into a conspiratorial plot beyond his control.
- They Live
While this one is more fantasy than most of the gritty reality films on this list, 1988’s “They Live” holds a special place in my heart not only for its creepy portrayal of a world overrun by aliens who are secretly controlling us all through subliminal messaging, but because it stars former WWF superstar “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Piper’s character, Nada, finds a pair of sunglasses, that when he puts them on, he is able to see the hidden messages and the aliens for what they really are.
